What is a NEMA Electric Motor?

NEMA stands for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. As part of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), this organization helped create the provisions for this law surrounding the improvement of motor efficiency in order to reduce the energy and operating costs for industrial, commercial and institutional buildings, reduce electric consumption for electrical motors and reducing pollution as a result, and help identify higher efficiency electric motors for customers.

NEMA Premium Motors Reduce Carbon Emissions

NEMA also established a NEMA Premium energy efficiency motors program to provide energy efficient products for a variety of applications for end-users and original equipment manufacturers. These highly energy efficient motors are estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by over 80 million metric tons—the equivalent of keeping 16 million cars off the road.

NEMA Premium Motors are Cost Efficient

NEMA has established new standards that allow users to easily find energy efficient motors produced by manufacturers all over the world, anywhere from ¼ HP to 400 HP. And since it is estimated that energy consumption is 95% of an electric motor’s lifetime operating cost, doesn’t it make sense to get the highest efficiency motor available?
